![]() I tend to work a quadrant of the quilt at a time, starting with the lower right quadrant. I make sure I come back around to the starting point and stitch to it so there's not an obvious starting point. ![]() When I've gone about a hands-width away, I stop on a seam intersection with my needle down and trim off the beginning threads so they don't get caught in the stitches when I resume stitching. In other words, if I'm using white thread, then I start on white fabric, stitch in place to lock the thread, then meander (stipple) away. May I answer your other question about stops and starts?įirst, I start the first few locking stitches somewhere in the middle of the quilt but choose a starting point on a fabric that matches the thread. You've gotten lots of good practice advice. (BTW my Mom hand quilted so that's all I was ever exposed to growing up) I could do smaller projects forever even, I've already inherited a house full of beautiful quilts my mom made. I figure I'll do a bunch of small projects until I'm super comfortable and then tackle my tucked away tops. But I'm not very good at restarting smoothly and get a little glob of thread. My other question is.I like to stop and regroup a lot. The big thing is to not do them to much alike but vary the size so I can fit the next row in so it doesn't look to planned. puzzle piece shapes) It seems to be working. Wondering if anyone has a little formula that you follow in your head when stippling? I kind of have one, I go in rows, I do this kind of mitten shape down and then a similar shape up, but try to vary the number of "thumbs" (i.e. I've watched youtube videos until the cows come home on stippling and everyone just seems to.do it. I haven't crossed my lines, but I've come close. There are some gnarly spots where I could have done better. I've stippled about a third of my wallhanging, and it's going okay. (I also know I can send them out to be quilted, but I want to do it all) I know there are other designs, but I like the look of stippling as an all over design and that's what I'm determined to learn. I seem to have a stippling mental block.I never know where to go. ![]() So now I've decided to start working on smaller no pressure projects. I practice and practice and almost feel ready to start, then bail at the last minute so then quilting goes on the back burner. I have 2 quilt tops (one I'm ashamed to say was for my Mom to have on her bed in the nursing home, and she's been gone 12 years now, I'm awful!) I have a fear of FMQ and so I get to that stage and I'm stuck. I don't accomplish, mainly because I get overwhelmed with my project. I'm a beginning quilter, well.my mom quilted and I "quilted" most of my adult life, but I'm still stuck at beginner, maybe an advanced beginner, but a beginner.
